Established in 1899, Lees-McRae is a private four-year college affiliated with the Presbyterian church. It has the highest elevation of any campus east of the Rockies and offers a variety of educational pursuits.

In winter, visitors to Banner Elk are just 10 minutes from the two largest ski resorts in the South: Sugar Mountain Resort and Beech Mountain Resort.
